Working from home? Here are some useful tips for setting up your home office.

If you’re new to the work-from-home lifestyle, whether because of the coronavirus or because you’ve found a remote-based job, you may have discovered that you need to change your habits and routines to be successful.

Having a clean, designated work area in your home will greatly increase your productivity. Whether you’re new to working remotely or simply want to upgrade your office space, these tips can help you stay productive and maintain home balance.

Establish an ergonomic workplace

As you’re setting up your home office, consider who else will use it and pick the space and furniture accordingly. Consider separating your office from the other people and activities in your household if it is in a communal space in your home.

Room dividers and bookcases are excellent ways to separate a workspace from the rest of the house without making it appear too small. If you have young children, try to keep what you leave on your desk after hours to a minimum. Putting your work gear away after use is essential to prevent little hands from swiping, ripping, or drawing on it.

Invest In Yourself

Those who work-from-home must be reminded that it is okay to spend time, money and effort into your office space. This space is where you will be spending the majority of your time so it has to be comfortable and feel inviting. 

Get yourself a sturdy desk big enough to house your monitors, keyboard, mouse, a notepad, stationery and perhaps a printer if needed. You want to invest in office furniture that contributes to your productivity by helping you stay comfortable all day.

Pick the perfect equipment

When you work from home, it can be tempting to simply grab a chair from the dining room. However, sitting at a desk for long periods of time without proper back support can lead to posture issues.

Spending the extra money on a comfortable, ergonomic office chair will provide you with the necessary comfort when you’re sitting for long periods of time. Purchasing a supportive chair, like the rest of your home office furniture, is an investment in yourself.

Another great tip for those working with dual monitors is to pick yourself up some monitor stands.  These will raise the height of your monitors on your desk and relieve neck strain. They also provide some hand storage underneath for loose papers or stationery, as well as a place to store your keyboard and mouse when not in use.

Organise your work area

Clutter can be one of the main inducers of stress and anxiety in a working environment. Keep your area clean for a clear conscience and you will notice an improvement in your concentration levels. 

Dedicate some storage solutions to your office space to reduce clutter. Consider storage solutions for your papers, stationery, and bulkier desk items like staplers, hole punchers, or extra printer ink.

Creating a cord management system is a great way to make your workplace appear cleaner. Cords can instantly make your desk space feel cluttered and unorganized, so investing in some velcro strips or cord holders is a must. Keep a box to the side for easy access and convenience.

Find the spot with a natural or good lighting

While poor office lighting will not cause blindness, it will strain your eyes. That eye strain can lead to headaches over time, making you a less productive employee. When working from home, eye strain can be the most demotivating factor, but it is also one of the simplest to correct.

Avoid distractions by keeping your workspace well-lit. Find a location with minimal screen glare and away from large windows that receive a lot of direct sunlight. Not only will a well-lit environment make you feel better, but it may also increase your productivity.
